Our model's answer to who to captain for FPL GW5 is straightforward:
Haaland, projected 9.4 points against SUN (H) with a 96% start probability. Nobody else in the top ten projections gets within 2.5 points of him.
The gap behind Haaland
Guéhi is next on the list at 6.9, a full 2.5 points back, with a 92% start probability.
Saka (6.8, gap -2.6, BHA away) and
B.Fernandes (6.7, gap -2.7, FUL away) follow, both with start probabilities above 90%.
Mbeumo and
Gibbs-White are tied on 6.3, each 3.1 points behind Haaland, with start probabilities of 90% and 93% respectively.
None of these are bad captain picks in isolation — B.Fernandes is owned by 40.5% of teams and Mbeumo by 22.0%, so both are well-established safe alternatives if you want to hedge against Haaland blanking. Saka, at 12.9% owned, is the pick for anyone wanting City's fixture without City's rate of ownership.
Is there a differential captain option?
Among players owned by under 10%, the highest projection belongs to
Murillo at 5.8 — Nottingham Forest's home fixture against COV, with a 91% start probability. He's owned by just 2.2%, and the projection sits 3.6 points below Haaland's, so this is a real punt rather than a close call.
Barry (5.7, 7.4% owned, IPS at home) is a milder differential swing at forward.
Further down the list,
Gvardiol (5.9, 25.3% owned) and
Ødegaard (5.4, 19.8% owned) round out the top ten without offering anything close to Haaland's ceiling.
The risk with Haaland
At 73.1% ownership, Haaland is close to a template pick this week, so the downside of captaining him is shared by most of the league rather than being a personal risk. His start probability of 96% is about as high as these figures get, and the projection gap to the next name on the list is the widest of any gameweek recently — 2.5 points to Guéhi in second. The case against him is really a case for differentiation: anyone chasing rank rather than protecting it might prefer Saka's fixture at a fraction of the ownership, or Murillo's punt at Forest.
How we worked this out
Projections come from our model's expected-points system for gameweek 5, combining fixture difficulty, start probability and recent form. See the full list on the captain picks table, check predicted line-ups before the deadline, and use the fixture difficulty ticker to look further ahead. Our model's season-long accuracy is tracked on the scorecard.
How this is written: an AI model drafts it from our projections and FPL's own data, and it is published only after an automatic check that every number, player and link in it comes from that data. The projections are graded in public on the scorecard.
